Marty Smith has a Masters in Creative Writing from Victoria University, 2004. Her poems have been selected for Best New Zealand Poems in 2009 ('Hat'), 2011 ('Emphysema for Aunty Gwen') and 2014 ('Agnus Dei'). 'Hat' was also selected for the anthology Best of Best New Zealand Poems (VUP) and 'Agnus Dei' was shortlisted for the 2014 Bridport Prize (UK), and was a placegetter in the Joy Harjo Poetry Prize (USA). The manuscript for her debut poetry collection, Horse with Hat was a finalist in the 2011 Kathleen Grattan Award, and was published by Victoria University Press in 2014.
Horse with Hat won the Jesse Mackay Award for Best First Book in the 2014 New Zealand Post Book Awards, and was a finalist for poetry in the same awards. In 2014 she was awarded a Creative New Zealand grant to write a book about the work of the people of the racing industry. Marty is a secondary school English teacher and the Creative Director of the Readers and Writers events at the Hawkes Bay Arts Festival.
